What is Coworking?
In today’s professional environment, it is becoming increasingly common for people to work from home, work for themselves, or in a start-up. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that by 2020, 40% of the American workforce will be made up of freelancers, consultants, and solopreneurs. The traditional brick and mortar company headquarters is a concept that is rapidly evolving and the way that people work, as well as where they work, is evolving with it. However, it is still true that most people work better together in a highly collaborative environment than they do alone. The coworking movement was born out of a need for a flexible, affordable, community-oriented, yet professional office. Business centers are typically very anti-social, and while coffee shops are quite social, the mixed crowd of those working and those not creates a social barrier. Working from the home office can be isolating and counter productive, while making it difficult to define a separate work and home life. Coworking spaces are about more than just getting work done. They are about community-strengthening, shared resources, and sustainability. Coworking is about creating a better place to work and as a result, a better way to work. And for us, there is no better place than Lake Tahoe.
How Does Coworking Work?
You’ve decided that you can no longer work at the kitchen table in such close proximity to the refrigerator or at your neighborhood coffee shop because of the guilt you feel if you don’t buy 8 lattes and pastries during your work day and the constant chatter of the high school clique that comes in within milliseconds of the last bell ringing. You don’t want to dish out for a full blown private office, or be stuck within four walls by yourself anyhow. And going back to a corporate office just isn’t going to happen in your lifetime if you can avoid it. So, what else is there? There’s coworking and in South Lake Tahoe, there’s Cowork Tahoe.
Walking in the door, you are welcomed by smiling faces (if not, let us know!), the sound of keyboards clicking away, coffee grounds, music, and conference calls. The room is focused, but not library quiet. Neighbors are chatting about the best way to solve a bug that has popped up in one of their projects.
Want to sign up to try it out? Its easy! Some coworkers like the stability of having a dedicated desk and work from the coworking space 5-days a week. Others prefer the flexibility and variety of still working from home a few days a week. Not sure if its going to work for you? Try a day or multi-pass to help get your coworking feet wet. Or maybe you need a little more privacy, but still want the company and community of a coworking office? Then one of our private offices might be the ticket. You can isolate yourself when you really need to get down to business, but still take a coffee break and check in on how everyone else is doing. Whatever balance you need, a coworking space like Cowork Tahoe will have it.
Okay, you’ve signed up. Now what? Well get to work and let the benefits rain down around you.
The Benefits of Coworking, A Love-List (sometimes you’re just too busy for letters)
- Coworking spaces are designed to help you get more work done, that’s something no coffee shop or home office can boast (I’m looking at you pile of laundry)
- You just might meet your next client there, or business partner, or best friend, or mentor...its networking without even trying - serendipity, baby.
- You have somewhere to bring clients for meetings - who wants to clean their house for a business meeting, let alone bring a client into your home in the first place. And sorry, but in terms of professionalism, the corner coffee shop just doesn’t have that required cache
- A good office chair...seriously, this is important.
- That watercooler community without the hierarchy and drama - spend your coffee break discussing the weather (in Tahoe, this is a big deal, especially in winter) or the best hiking trail instead of dissing the boss
- Having someone to go to lunch with - or a lunch ski-break - or a beer break. Its really up to you, but at least you don’t have to do it alone.
- You just might learn something new! With workshops, lectures, meetups, and a broad range of industries all under one roof, you’re bound to pick up a few things
- Save money - a private office is a big expense and a hassle. Let us deal with the minutiae so you can get your real work done.
- Accountability - if you don’t show up for a few days, we will notice, we will reach out. Its like having a gym buddy. If someone expects you to get off your couch and our of your PJs, you’re more likely to actually do it.
